This clump-forming agave from central Mexico grows to about 2 and a half feet tall and just as wide. As with other Agaves, this plant is drought tolerant and is regularly grown for its foliage which is a nice green.

Water this agave regularly in the warmer months. Keep rather dry in winter. Agave celsii will take more humidity than most other Agaves in summer. The short flower spike is yellowish-green to purple.

This plant will take full sun, but will prefer some afternoon shade in areas with very hot dry summers. Hardy to around 18°F.

Agave americana was introduced into Europe around the middle of the 16th century, and it is now widely cultivated for its handsome appearance. Spanish and Portuguese explorers probably brought Agaves back with them, but the plants became popular in Mediterranean gardens in Europe during the 19th century, with many types being imported by collectors.
