This is the agave that is used to make tequila in Mexico and central America. Having been cultivated in so many areas, it's difficult to determine just where these plants originated.

Water this Agave regularly in the warmer months. Keep rather dry in winter. This plant will take full sun and has a great tolerance to heat. Hardy to around 25°F. Expect a mature size of about 5 feet tall and just as wide.

Agaves were once classified in Liliaceae but most references now include them in their own family, Agavaceae. They are very attractive plants in desert gardens.
