These slow growing succulents from the deserts of Mexico form a compact rosette of rigid leaves. This agave should grow to a width of about a foot and half, making it suitable for a large decorative pot. Only be careful of the sharp spines at the end of each leaf.

Agave victoriae-reginae may grow for 50 years before blooming. The flower stalk may reach 15 feet. Flowers are at first pale-green to cream. Sadly the plant dies after blooming.

Common to other agaves, this plant requires little water and tolerates the heat well. You can plant this agave where it receives full sun. Hardy to about 15°F.

Agaves have long presented special difficulties for taxonomy; variations within a species may be considerable. A number of named species are of unknown origin which may just be variants of wild species.
