The Nicobar Islands, claimed by India, are drops of land dotted along the eastern edge of the Bay of Bengal. From there comes the elegant Bentinck Palm, named after Lord William Bentinck, governor of Madras (1803-1807).

Bentinckia nicobarica is a relatively fast-growing type of Palm. These Palm trees seem to prefer light shade and plenty of water.

Growing to a height of about 40 feet, this rarely cultivated species forms a smooth slender trunk covered with prominently decorative rings.

The feather-shaped leaves arch gracefully forming an attractive lime-green crownshaft. Leaves on young plants may remain undivided. Inflorescences may appear multi-branched.

Protect this Palm tree from freezing. In fact, we suggest a minimum temp of 40°F to play it safe. A well-established plant might withstand temperature just above freezing if given additional protection (green house, overturned barrel)

Despite a wimpy tolerance to cold, Bentinckia nicobarica is another attractive Palm tree boasting real tropical appeal.
