Brahea armata ranks high on our list for outdoor landscape. Though this palm is a bit slow to grow, with time it may elevate to 30 feet or so in height.
The rocky canyons of Baja California and north-western Mexico is where this palm can be seen growing in nature. The Blue Hesper Palm, as it is sometimes called, is rarely seen in the tropics since it is generally too wet and humid.
Once a prominent trunk has established, your juvenile Blue Hesper Palm may withstand temperature below freezing, given that you protect yours from standing in water. Who wants to soak their feet in near-freezing water anyway?
Seriously, this is a great outdoor palm to accentuate driveways, backyard patios and parking lots among a host of other likely candidates. Quite noticeable about Brahea armata is the dense arrangement of silvery-greenish-blue palmate leaves.
The glossy fruit of Brahea armata is round and dark about 3/4 inch diameter and contains a single seed. Stored seed may take up to 12 months to erratically germinate, so fresh is best. Our B. armata palms are already about a year old. You can pick up several for yourself for less than $5 apiece.
Note: Brahea palms are sometimes listed under the older genus name, Erythea. The name Brahea refers to the 16th Century Danish astronomer, Tycho Brahe (1546-1601). The species name comes from the Latin word meaning "armed".
