Palms are generally thought to be these great towering plants we can tie our hammock to and watch the sunset. There are also many small palms and a few that can grow nicely indoors.
Chamaedorea metallica is very different than most palms. The leaves are stiff and have a very simple undivided leaf. In deep shade the leaves get dark green and almost black with a metallic sheen. Hence the name Metallica. The metallic luster shows up particularly well when the leaves are moist.
Naturally tolerant of low light conditions, the Metallica Palm is perfect for understory plantings and ideal as a houseplant. Indoor placement is versatile, as it does not typically respond well to direct sunlight.
These should be alright growing in a dark corner. Or even planted outside under the shade of a large tree, given the temperature stays above 32°F. Reports of 24°F have come to our attention, but it was likely for just a very short time.
Soil should be rich with nutrients and reasonably moist, though you shouldn't let this one stand in water. It's been said that snails are particularly fond of this Palm.
Expect a mature height of about 8ft. The stem or trunk is very slender, so a mature Palm would consume very little space. Popular opinion seems to be they look better when arranged several to a pot.
This an endangered species in Mexico. Chamaedorea metallica is restricted to a small area in Veracruz and Oaxaca, with an estimated 50,000 adults occurring in the area. The fruits are not edible. The sap may irritate sensitive skin.
