The spider plant is without question one of the most popular houseplants often seen in hanging baskets. This clump-forming, evergreen perennial is used as groundcover and lining borders, edging around beds and walkways.

There are more than 200 species in the genus Chlorophytum. All are evergreen perennials, but only a few are cultivated regularly.

Although it will tolerate neglect, your spider plant should be watered regularly when in active growth. Avoid the mid-day full sun. A healthy spider plant can form a clump 3ft tall and across. Flowers are delicate and white.

Among the commonly available varieties of Chlorophytum comosum, Mandaianum has a yellow stripe down the center of each leaf, Variegatum has white stripes on the margins of the leaves with green down the center, Vittatum has recurved leaves with white central stripes, and the wild species has solid green leaves.

Common Names: spider plant, airplane plant, spider ivy, ribbon plant, hen-and-chickens
