This Echeveria (believed to have been discovered in a Matamoros garden around the turn of the century by Dr. R. Runyon) prefers plenty of water in the warm months of Spring and Summer. Provide very little or no water in Winter, protect from frost, and provide some shade.
The seemingly illuminated rosette grows to a spread of about 5 inches. Echeveria runyonii may later offset from the base. Flowers form on a stalk, are red to orange and about an inch long.
Echeveria is a large genus of succulents in the Crassulaceae family. They are native from Mexico to northwestern South America. The genus Echeveria is named after the 18th century Spanich botanist Atanasio Echeverria Codoy. Several of these species are outstanding garden plants. A large number offsets heavily and are given the common name of 'Hen and Chicks'.
Most species grow in the shade and can take some frost. All species are drought resistant, but they grow better with regular deep watering and fertilizing.
