The handsome Chilean Wine Palm, Jubaea chilensis, is revered for a sweet syrup yielded from the sap. This once popular delicacy caused abundant populations of these Palms to diminish in number, as the tree must be brought down to collect the valued sap.

This slow-growing Palm is indigenous to Chile. Fortunately for all growers, the Jubaea population is being restored due to cultivation efforts.

A very old Jubaea chilensis may reach a height of 60ft. A dense growth of long featherlike leaves crown a smooth massive trunk. Round fruit produced from this tree resemble small coconuts and are called coquitos. This beautiful Palm is successfully grown in central and southern California.
