Latin Name: Leuchtenbergia principis prism cactus 5.00 (3-inch)
Leuchtenbergia is a monotypic genus (having only a single species). Although occurring over a rather large area of northeastern Mexico, these unusual cacti are sparsely scattered and can be difficult to spot.
Quite rare in habitat, this distinctive, long tubercled plant grows easily from seed in cultivation. The tubercles go up and get close to each other when the humidity is low to decrease evaporation. They open to increase photosynthesis when conditions are appropriate. The Leuchtenbergia has a strong tap root and should have a deep pot to accommodate it.
Mature Leuchtenbergia principis has yellow flowers, 3 inches wide at the tip of the tubercles. They are followed by green-purple smooth fruit. When ripe, the bottom of the fruit opens and may release many seeds.
