The bright red flowers of the this Spider Lily make it one of the showiest plants in the Fall garden. The showy display should last for weeks and will get better every year. Once the flowers fade the foliage is produced and persists long into the Winter.
Lycoris radiata reproduces by offset bulbs and seed, however it requires a warm (60-70°F) to (32-40°F) to (60-70°F) annual thermoperiodic cycle to set flowers.
Also called Hurricane Lily, Lycoris radiata is easy to grow. Just plant one bulb almost anywhere in the landscape and it will make a showy appearance when you least expect. Although it tolerates Summer drought, it requires moisture during the growing season.
The bud may require some conditioning in order to set bloom. Primarily, ours are kept in the ground year-long where they receive full sun until mid-day. It's here they endure a dry spell (which may last for a month here with day-time temps still in the 90°s). After this, a thorough soaking around mid-September seems to be the trigger. This is what works for us. You might prefer an alternative method.
