There is actually no such species as Musa violacea, although the name is often used by seed suppliers.
These plants are derived from Musa ornata but may result from hybridisation with other Musa species, possibly Musa velutina. The name Musa violacea has been applied to plants that have actually turned out to be Ensete ventricosum.
I try to keep plants properly identified, but sometimes it's so difficult. Banana varieties are no exception.
The Musaceae family (banana family) is made up of three genera, Musa, Ensete and Musella. Musa is the largest group, with about 35 species.
The genus Musa has been further divided into different sections:
1. Musa (22 chromosomes)
2. Callimusa (20 chromosomes)
3. Ingentimusa (14 chromosomes)
Additionally, there are about seven Ensete species and one Musella species.
