Opuntia macrocentra makes a great outdoor center-piece with its long spines and vibrantly colored pads. In an attempt to trim liability, we suggest planting this variety away from sidewalks, doors, et cetera.
As with most Opuntia, growth is exceptionally persistant. Being tolerant of drought, this plant requires very little maintenance. A mature height of about 4ft gives you numerous placement options. However a relatively dry area in full sun with a minimum temperature of 10°F is essential.
Opuntia is a very large and diverse genus of the Cactus family. The name Opuntia actually comes from the name of a Greek city. Plants of this group range from small specimen just a few inches in height with dime-sized pads to the magnificent padded plants towering over 30 feet in height.
Not surprisingly, many of these varieties are easy to propagate, tolerant of drought and relatively easy to grow. The flowers are generally large and colorful.
