If you have the room to accomodate a 40+ft fan palm, Ravenea rivularis may be for you. Being a relatively quick grower, this single-trunked Palm would do well in a variety of landscapes. The long-term benefit of planting Rivenea rivularis away from utility lines is certainly obvious.
The trunk will eventually become smooth and swollen at the base. An array of long feather-shaped leaves drape over the top creating a tropical masterpiece.
Considered semi-hardy, the Majesty Palm (as it's sometimes called) has been reported to endure brief encounters with Mr. Freeze. If you're growing in an area with intense summer heat (south Texas for example), your new Palm will likely appreciate some afternoon shade.
As is the case for most tropical plants, this Palm prefers a rich soil with plenty of water. Raveneas are frequently cultivated as house plants, but they need to be kept in a bright area with frequent water. This specie comes from rain forests of Madagascar where it grows at the edge of rivers and swamps.
